Label Spotlight #005 - Turbo Recordings

Tiga’s eclectic Turbo Recordings has been instrumental in the success of Tiga himself and in launching the careers of top-tier Techno and Electro talent including Cromeo, Proxy and Azari & III. Alongside this, the Montreal-based label also plays home to the likes of Duke Dumont, Gesaffelstein, ANNA, Boys Noize, and GoldFFinch, and we’re thrilled to award our Label Spotlight to them this time around.

With Turbo Recordings latest project from Ali X & Theus Mago titled “Let’s Get Naked” which is out now on Traxsource. We sat down with the Label Manager – Francis di Stasio to chat about the label, favorite tracks, and more in our next edition of Label Spotlight series.

Hi Francis, please give us a little bit of background on you and the label.

I started out as a curious intern, and stuck around long enough to eventually make my way up to label manager. I’ve been at the helm for just over two years now and I’ve steered the label through a pretty big transition period, but now we’ve settled in to our new setup and I feel like we’re ready to take on anything.

What have been your favourite releases from the label over the years?

Two tracks that stand out for me that people might not know are:

Borderline- Stay (original mix)

Moby – I love to move in here (von party & brad Lamborghini remix)

Tell us a bit about what’s coming up for the label.

The imminent future sees new material from Tiga, and we’ve slated some awesome releases for next year already: EPs from Sascha Funke, Hoshina-Anniversary, and a collaboration between Shaded & Harvard Bass. I don’t want to give anymore than that away for now ;)

What’s been your best moment (so far) working at the label & best project to work on to date?

It all really pays off when we throw a successful party that we’ve been working on for months, and I get to spend fun times with the artists that I normally only contact by email. I’m fortunate to work with some of the most amazing people in the world on a daily basis and it’s always good times when we’re reunited. But as far as ‘best project’ goes, the Bugatti campaign was really exciting stuff, it was amazing to see the song take off the way it did.

If you could have signed any record in the world for the label, what would it have been and why?

It would have been awesome to get the Paranoid London LP on Turbo, I think we came close to signing it but the deal never worked out in the end. We’re all big supporters of their stuff and it would only make sense to have it on the label considering how much we care.

What do you look for when signing a record for Turbo?

It’s hard to put it into words, but what we look for are records that are unique, interesting, and playable in our sets. I go through tons of good demos every day, but only the truly special tracks get signed. We just feel it when it’s right. My advice to budding producers would be to strive to be different. That’s the way to get us excited and to move this culture forward. I can’t tell you how many Gesaffelstein imitations I’ve had to listen through in the past few years.
